Lure Comparisons and Review

Have you made a recent fishing trip to Lake Powell?
If you have, please let us know how you did.  Send your fishing report to Wayne Gustaveson (waynegustaveson@hughes.net) via E-mail.  Please include who you are and where you're from, dates fished, location, tackle used, species and number of fish caught and any other information you would like to pass on to other anglers.

Visit the Anglers Corner - Fishing reports from Lake Powell by anglers for anglers.

If you have a general question try posting on WAYNESWORDS BULLETIN BOARD.

Look here for lure reviews, types and information. These are lures that I use often and talk about in fish reports

This page is under construction and will grow with time.  Let me know how I can improve it to be of greater service to you.

Lucky Craft Bevy Shad 75

Cost: $16

Rapala X-Rap-10 - Cost $6

In side-by side comparison tests both jerk baits performed well.  The ghost color Bevy Shad (left) has a larger diving lip so it gets down a few feet deeper on the retrieve. Both have good true flight when casting.

Both lures suspend well and slowly rise - tail first.  The Bevy stays down longer but both work well when the line remains taut keeping the lure horizontal.

Retrieve both lures about 12 inches and then pause,  using the suspending capability to your advantage. Then jerk again.

This was not a fair test as the X-Rap is actually more similar to the Lucky Craft Pointer deep diver which has a similar long wobble instead of the tighter vibrating retrieve of the Bevy.

The X-Rap is a good striper lure for fishing near cover and in shallow water. The Bevy is a better multi-species lure appealing to bass and walleye more than the X-Rap.

The smaller X-rap 8 is the same size and weight as the Bevy.  If looking for a multi- species lure get size 8.  If just fishing stripers then choose the size 10.

Bomber Long A

Suspending Jerk Bait

Very similar in size and weight to the X-Rap jerk bait above. Casting distance is similar, as is retrieve action.

There is no need for 3 hooks. I suggest removing the front hook to aid in holding the lure and  unhooking fish.

Works as well as the X-Rap with the wobble of a bigger bodied lure on retrieve. Is not comparable to the Bevy shad.

TROLLING BAITS

Shad Rap (SR- 9)

Strength is flat line trolling although casting works well.  Runs about 12-15 feet.  The larger profile allows lure to dive deeper than the standard SR7 size normally available in stores. Does not suspend.  Gray/black is color for normally feeding fish. Use chartreuse in muddy water. Use a fire tiger color when fish are stubborn.

Deep Thunderstick (Storm)

Dives to 15-20 feet when properly tuned on 10-pound test monofilament

Deep Down Husky Jerk (Rapala) in clown color

Dives to 15-20 feet when properly tuned on 10-pound test monofilament

Deep Thunderstick

Same lure different color

Norman Little N (suspending)

Dives to 20 feet.  Lure suspends when motionless.  Great for cold weather and sluggish fish.

RATTLETRAPS

General class of lipless vibrating lures (LV)

Most lure makers have an LV line that are similar.  Best used for shallow (15 feet and less) fish that are feeding on other fish.

Line attachment point is on top of the lure since it has no diving lip. Lure is not buoyant and will sink so it can be fished deep with a jigging action.  More commonly as it is steadily retrieved it rises to a depth of less than 10 feet.

Soft Plastic

Grubs and Tubes

Single tail grub is threaded on a lead heap or fished with a sliding sinker and worm hook.

The tube encases the special  lead head which must be pushed inside the tube.  The hook eyelet is then pushed through the plastic skin so the line can be attached.

Spooks

From the bottom-Spook Puppy, Super Spook jr., original Spook, Super Spook, and Super Spook magnum.

Thanks Ken Lee.

Wally Diver

One of many "banana lures" very effective for trolling for stripers and walleye. Bass hit it as well.
