TOPIC: Detour Milages from the south
#51708
Detour Milages from the south 1 Year, 1 Month ago
The top milages are from a central familar point, Cameron, AZ
calculated on Map Quest, add extra time for the Gap route because of bad wahsboard or wet conditions, I wouldn't even try it in the wet, it's clay for several miles at the Gap end and is very nasty

DPS and the Navajo PD is not recommending Page boound traffic use Coppermine Rd at The Gap. They're not keeping people off at this point but they might limit it to local traffic if it gets bad enough.

Cameron to Page via 160 through Tuba City and 98
130 miles, 2H 14 min.

Cameron to Page via 160 to Tonalea, N on Indian Route 21 to Kaibeto, last 7 miles dirt, 98 to Page
107 miles, 2H 5min

Cameron to Page via Indian Route 20, 27 miles dirt (Coppermine Rd.) at The Gap
77 miles, , 2H 5min.

Gap to Marble Canyon
40 miles

Page to Marble Canyon via Coppermine
86 miles

Page to Marble Canyon via House Rock Road
91 miles, 29 miles dirt on House Rock Rd
better dirt road than Coppermine and much less traffic

I am going to pin this post because I know as we move into Spring and Summer there is going to be a lot of questions on how to get there from the south.

I would like to add some info to the routes. Going up to the lake I followed the detour signs and took 160 to 98. Coming home I took 98 to Kaibito then N21 to 160. This route starts at Kaibito as packed and graded red clay. You can do 45mph with no problem and no gravel being tossed up. I measured about 7 miles of clay. They are working on it and it will probably be paved all the way soon. It is a better road than 98 and the nice thing is they do not allow large trucks on it, so traffic moves nicely. I did this route the 15th and 17th. Milage savings as stated in previous post are accurate.

We drove the N21 route both ways earlier this week. It was easy driving up on Sunday, but traffic was being diverted onto a temporary road in the ditch for a few miles on Thursday as we headed back south. There was a large crew working, and they seemed very organized and motivated. One section had been paved while we were up at the lake. I would expect day to day variation and an early completion of paving. We had not driven N21 before. It is an easy drive through a beautiful area.

I talked with some of the crew and they expect to be thru with the paving May 15th. Then they head over to N20 to pave it. Expect to take 2 months.

Beware of tribal police. They lurk well off the road in the dirt driveways. Also if you have a high rig there is a bridge that is 13'6" nine miles north of Hwy160.

Thanks to everyone on this thread about N21.
Helps much in our planning.
We'll be running back and forth 3 or 4 times in the next two months,
maybe I can also add more after.

Does anyone have what the mileage was between Cameron & page the normal ( pre washed out road) way? trying to gauge how much additional miles the detours add. Thanks.

The longest one 160 to 98 adds about 45 miles. Sorry I don't know the other two.

I am not sure about mileage, but the N21 route is only about 20 minutes more then the original route...

There is a left hand turn just before reaching the end. It was not marked the first time I went thru but well marked on my last trip. Big difference in the road condition. As I said, it was well marked on my second trip. I can' find my old post. Perhaps it was deleted. : )
