Fish Report January 26 -28
We arrived Thursday afternoon with a crew of Capt Rimrock, K-bass, Mark,
Hotwheels and myself (Gold Cup). Striper Steve joined us on Friday.
We filled the “live well” (aka garbage can) with twenty or so good fat stripers, fishing
right off the back of the houseboat on Thursday night. As you can see by the pictures,
all the fish averaged around five pounds. K-bass caught a few that we weighed in at
slightly over six pounds.
These stripers are the fattest and most healthy fish I have caught in many years.
One Slab filled a dinner plate.
We put out the green light and set the lines anywhere from fifty to seventy feet.
K-bass was graphing fish all through the water column along with lots of shad as they
moved through and under the boat. We put one third to one half of an anchovy on a small
jig head and let it sink to sixty feet. We enticed the stripers with a half bag of chum to get
them started.
The bite started as a soft peck to a major gulp and we missed more than we caught.
We couldn’t really find the fish trolling during the day as we trolled both the backs of Halls
and Bullfrog bays, some other guys in two boats were able to pick up seven or eight
and we picked up a few but nothing to write home about.
Friday and Saturday nights produced fewer fish but maybe we just didn’t take it as serious.
The weather was very mild in the upper 50’s during the day and the night fishing was cool but
pleasant with little or no wind.
Water temps were 49 degrees and the moon waxing cresent (quarter moon).
Great trip as always and very pleasant for the end of January.
