On 12/23/11 I was fishing from our houseboat in a cove straight across the lake from the far end of wahweap rental houseboats. I cast my pole at 8pm with 12# mono line in 20 ft of water with 2 hooks with 1/2 anchovy each, then took the pole down the side to the front of the houseboat and laid it on the side of the rail with the reel wedged in between two gas cans, put the bell on, and went in to watch TV thinking I might catch a catfish for my yellow lab Misty to play with then throw back in.
About 15 minutes later we heard a loud noise from the front. I jumped up to investigate and my pole was going crazy, the line zipping off of the reel. I grabbed it and tighten the drag. It was a strong big fish and it was still taking line but not as fast. I went down the side of the boat to the back.
I fought it for about 15 Minutes. I was so excited I forgot my coat and it was only about 30 degrees outside, but I was not cold at all. I finally got it to the back of the boat and I could not believe it; my Christmas wish came true: a big striper and to get in to the Lake Powell Big Striper Contest, my son took the pole and I reached down and grabbed the biggest fish that I have ever caught at lake Powell by the lower lip and brought it in the boat.
My fisherdog Misty usually can't wait until I get the fish off the hook so she can play with it, but it was so big she was scared of it. She would not go near it. The striper was 18lbs., 34" long and 18" girth. .
Thank you for your web site and all you do for lake Powell and all of us Wayne you're Great".
