I just got back from another excellent trip up to Lake Powell! I had the pleasure of fishing with Jeff Bierer in his crest liner Nov 14-17. Jeff had located the fish during his previous trip up to the lake and assured me that they would bite again with the stable weather.
Monday evening we started off trolling for stripers with limited luck so we decided to throw some cranks for bass. It turned out to be a great idea as we had some of the best fishing for big largemouths I have ever seen at Powell. We landed numerous fish over four pounds. These fish were extremely fat and healthy and all of them were returned to the lake to fight another day! I am sure that those big girls will produce many more baby largemouths for us next spring!
We had our best striper action of the trip on Thursday morning. We were fishing in the back of wahwheap bay and we caught them trolling, throwing cranks, and spooning! We left by noon as we had plenty of fish to fillet before the drive home. While we were fishing on Thursday Jeff hooked into a GIANT striper that he fought for close to ten minutes. The fish pulled out so much line off of his reel that I actually had to back down on the fish, much like you would a marlin. After what seemed like an eternity the fish began to tire and Jeff inched him closer to the boat, the massive fish took one last head shake and threw the lure right before I could net him. It was a true heart breaker, as it was the largest striper either Jeff or I have seen at the lake! Oh well......all the more reason to come back and try again!
We caught largemouths, stripers, and smallmouths but no walleye on this trip! The striper fishing was great, but the big largemouths definitely stole the show! I will let the pictures speak for themselves! Thanks for taking me fishing Jeff! The seasons not over yet! See you all on the lake sometime soon!
Tight Lines,
