November 11, Hite stripers

E-mail Print PDF

Great site, a big thanks to you and all who share. It shortens the learning curve.
The wife and I fished at Hite on Nov. 8-10. Almost all of our time was spent trolling for stripers and we never found a need to go more than a mile from the boat ramp.
The first morning as we were getting ready to launch we had the chance to visit with a really nice guy from wyoming. He was just coming in and said that the morning bite had been good but was now winding down. He'd been trolling along the wall across from the ramp and down to the island in the mouth of north wash. We were sad to hear that the morning bite was over but were determined to try any way, so out we headed and were soon catching fish, the hot lure that day was a black back chrome rattle trap.

Day two was a lot slower but still produces some nice stripers and one smallie.
On the third day we could only fish until noon and it was just dead until about 9:00 and then we picked up a few. As the morning wore on we put out some deep diving shadraps and that really helped. I checked on my gps and it said that the best time to fish that day was from 10:38 until 12:38. in that last hour and a half we put another dozen fat stripers in the boat. I have never before checked the fishing tables and compared them to our actual results but they sure seemed to nail it that day.

Have any of you ever really studied that out to see if there is any thing to it?

We saw two short scattered boils but were never able to catch any fish from them. They were only up for about a minute or two and then gone. Still fun to see.
With all the shad in the lake and the fish in such great shape I would think that there will be some really good fishing next year.

The fish were mostly around 3 pounds with a couple of 5 pounders and one about 6.
When you are trolling at 4 miles per hour and a 3-5 pound fish hits it gives a real jolt. It sure beats bait fishing. Weather was cold and windy most of the time. water is now 55 degrees and  below the end of the cement ramp. We ended up with about 40 pounds of fillets. Could have been warmer but over all it was a great trip.
Good luck to all who go.
