Wayne's Words Lake Powell Fishing Forum

Just returned from the San Juan

We arrived on the lake on 7/17 and motored up the SJ about 6 miles. Found a nice cove and tied up the HB for the duration. Fishing was fantastic. We landed several SM and a few LM right off the back of the HB. We were using white with speckles 4" single tail grubs on 3/8 oz lead head. This worked great. Changed colors up mid week to watermelon with black specks and also a little luck with pumpkin with black specks.

We fished striper boils from both the ski boat and jet skis daily. All the fisherman in our group caught fish, which is good considering the newbies had no clue about this bass stuff! The boils ranged from small to rather large. The boils could be located from the mouth of the SJ up to Cha canyon. We speed reeled the white grubs thru the boils and had constant hook ups! Nice fish in the 3-5 pound range. They were full of shad! We lost count on the qty of fish taken, but have several 1 gallon freezer bags full. The full moon had little or no effect on fishing!

Early in the week, we went to deep canyon, mid day, and caught 10 or so on chovies, while hanging in the shade. We fished for an hour or so, so the catch rate was decent.

We explored a few days and spent lots of time skiing, wake boarding, and knee boarding. The weather was decent with a few cloudy, gusty afternoons. Not as hot as last year at this time, but still topped 100 a few days.

Back in early Sept with the boys! Will the boils be going strong then?

Thanks,
Bruce

ps. no propane at dangling rope to answer my question a few weeks back!
