My admonition is to target walleye when they are most likely to hit. The time zone is April 15 to June 15th.
Now to target walleye I go out before dawn and fish slick rock cuts with soft plastic bass lures gently sliding them down the cut from 5 to 20 feet deep. If I was really serious about walleye I would use a night crawler as a chaser on the jig.
After sun hits the water look for mud lines (wind wash or boat wakes) on long points dumping into the main channel. Troll the points with wally divers hitting bottom at 12 feet. Or cast into muddy coves with sand bottom in 5 to 15 feet of water. Again using night crawlers for casting is advised.
Bottom bouncers with worm harnesses are the preferred method. I have not prefected that so have no further advice.
In reality I dont fish for walleye often and catch most by accident when fishing plastic for bass or jigging spoons for stripers.
I can pinpoint wind washed points in May and predictably catch walleye trolling.
