My name is Peter Flax; I'm Backpacker's executive editor. I'm sorry I don't have time to respond to each of you personally, but I wanted to let you know that we've received and read your letters. The most important thing I think I can say is this: I know that you are members of a community that cares very deeply about Lake Powell and that you'd like the current management to continue. Unfortunately, I think your letters are sidetracked by rants, poorly substantiated claims of inaccuracy or conspiracy, and insults. I think it's in your interest to try and elevate the dialogue. You're up against an increasingly organized and powerful coalition that is far larger than you seem to think. This situation is really about two groups that feel passionately--but differently--about a beautiful place, a beloved way of life, an important symbol. I think both sides need to be prepared for a passionate fight over people's minds and political action. In the end, I want you all to know that I respect your passion for Lake Powell and your will to preserve it--even as we try to advance our own cause.
